Chapter 11: Preparing for Trial

The crisp autumn air carried the scent of fallen leaves and woodsmoke as October settled over the suburban neighborhood. Inside the Harrison home, David spent his evenings reviewing legal exhibits with his attorney, preparing for the upcoming criminal trial. Every document, medical report, and police statement was organized meticulously in binders across the dining table.

Leo rolled his wheelchair into the dining room, holding a drawing he had made during his afternoon session with Hannah. He handed it to David proudly. It was a colorful picture of a tall iron fence surrounding a blue pool, with a smiling boy and his father standing safely on the green lawn outside.

"Is this for the trial, Dad?" Leo asked, resting his hands on his wheelchair wheels.

David looked down at the drawing, a deep wave of emotion tightening his throat. He smiled warmly, kneeling down to be at eye level with his son. "This is incredible, Leo. It's the best drawing you've ever made. Can I show it to the judge? It shows how safe our home is now."

"Only if it helps keep the bad things away," Leo whispered, his expression earnest.

"It will," David promised, kissing the boy's forehead. "The trial starts next week. I have to go down to the courthouse for a few hours tomorrow morning to finalize my testimony with the district attorney. Martha is going to come over and watch a movie with you. Sound good?"

Leo nodded happily. "Can we order pizza?"

"Pizza is definitely on the menu," David laughed softly, feeling the heavy burden of the past weeks lighten just a fraction.

The doorbell rang, breaking the quiet evening atmosphere. David walked down the hallway and opened the front door to find Officer Miller standing on the porch, holding an official court summons envelope.

"Evening, Mr. Harrison," Miller said, handing over the envelope. "Just serving the final witness subpoena packet for next Monday's proceedings. The prosecutor wants you on the stand first thing in the morning."

"I'll be there, Officer," David said, taking the papers. "Ready to put this chapter behind us for good."
