Chapter 13: The Verdict
The jury deliberated for a little over four hours before returning to the courtroom with their verdict. The air was thick with tension as Judge Sterling re-entered the room and took her seat behind the mahogany bench. Flashbulbs popped softly outside the tall windows as journalists strained to catch every detail.
"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Sterling asked, looking toward the foreman.
"We have, Your Honor," the foreman replied, standing up and holding a white envelope. He handed it to the bailiff, who carried it up to the bench.
Judge Sterling unfolded the paper, read the contents silently, and then adjusted her glasses to look directly at the defense table. She exhaled softly before speaking into the microphone.
"On the first count of reckless endangerment of a minor, the jury finds the defendant, Sarah Harrison, guilty," Judge Sterling announced clearly. "On the second count of aggravated child abuse and depraved indifference, the jury finds the defendant guilty."
A collective murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery. Sarah slumped forward in her chair, burying her face in her hands as her defense attorney placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. Across the aisle, David felt a profound, heavy wave of relief wash over him. The legal nightmare was finally coming to an end, and justice had been served objectively and fairly.
"Sentencing will take place in two weeks," Judge Sterling declared, striking her gavel with a sharp, echoing blow. "The defendant is remanded to custody immediately pending sentencing."
As two bailiffs stepped forward to escort Sarah from the courtroom, she briefly looked up, her tear-streaked face locking eyes with David across the aisle. There was no anger left in her expression—only a hollow, broken realization of the consequences of her own actions. David did not look away, maintaining a steady, protective gaze that signaled the absolute permanence of his dedication to his son.
