Chapter 6: Shadows of the Past

Two weeks slipped by in a quiet routine of physical therapy appointments, grocery deliveries, and legal paperwork. The backyard swimming pool remained covered by a heavy, opaque safety tarp, its deep blue water hidden beneath a layer of industrial vinyl. David spent his evenings sitting on the back patio with Leo, playing board games under the warm glow of string lights while the suburban night settled around them.

Yet, the psychological scars ran deep. One evening, after putting Leo to bed, David sat at the kitchen island reviewing bank statements and legal retainers. His phone buzzed against the granite countertop, displaying an unknown caller ID from an area code across the state. He hesitated for three seconds before swiping to answer.

"Hello?" David said, his voice cautious.

"David? It's Marcus. Your old supervisor from the regional engineering firm," a familiar, raspy voice replied. "I heard about what happened at your house. I'm calling to check in, but also... to warn you."

David frowned, leaning back in his chair. "Warn me about what, Marcus?"

"Sarah’s family hired private representation—expensive civil litigators out of the city," Marcus explained gravely. "They're trying to spin a narrative that you abandoned her emotionally, driving her to a nervous breakdown, and that you engineered the confrontation to gain sole custody and freeze her out of the marital assets."

A cold spike of anger pierced David’s chest. "That's completely absurd. She pushed our disabled son into a swimming pool while screaming at him. Martha witnessed the whole thing."

"I know the truth, and Martha knows the truth, but civil court isn't always about truth, David. It's about narrative and resources," Marcus said sympathetically. "They're going to dig into your past, your time away for work, everything. You need to be prepared for a very ugly custody battle."

"Let them dig," David said firmly, his voice dropping into a steely resolve. "I have nothing to hide. Every hour I spent away was documented and earned for Leo's medical care."

After ending the call, David walked over to the hallway window and looked out at the dark backyard. The wind rustled the oak trees, casting dancing shadows across the pool cover. He knew Marcus was right; Sarah's legal team would not go down quietly. Protecting his son meant preparing for an all-out war in the courtroom.
