The final sentencing hearing concluded on a brisk Tuesday morning. Sarah received a sentence of five years in a medium-security correctional facility with mandatory psychological rehabilitation, ensuring she posed no further threat to her family while receiving the mental health intervention she desperately required. The permanent custody order was finalized, granting David absolute guardianship of Leo without any visitation restrictions or legal ambiguity.
Back at the house, the backyard felt entirely transformed. The new iron security fence stood tall and sturdy around the pristine blue pool, and colorful autumn leaves danced across the manicured lawn. Inside the living room, David and Leo were packing a few small bags for a weekend road trip to the mountains—their first real vacation together in over a year.
Leo wheeled himself over to the front hallway, holding his favorite comic book and smiling brightly. "Dad, did we win?"
David knelt down, packing a pair of extra socks into the duffel bag before looking up at his son with a warm, proud smile. "We didn't just win, Leo. We secured our future. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or take you away from our home again. We're free to just be a family."
"Can we stop for ice cream on the way to the mountains?" Leo asked eagerly.
"Double scoops for both of us," David laughed, standing up and zipping the bag closed. "Consider it part of our official celebration."
Martha walked through the front door, having let herself in with her spare key to drop off some travel snacks. She smiled warmly at the sight of the packed bags in the hallway. "Looks like you two are all set for the great adventure."
"All set, Martha," David said, walking over to hug the kind neighbor who had saved their lives through her courage and honesty. "We couldn't have made it through this without you. You'll always be family to us."
Martha wiped a stray tear from her cheek, smiling broadly. "Just bring me back a postcard from the mountains. Now get going before traffic piles up on the highway."
