Chapter 8: The Sterile Corridor

The fluorescent lights of City General Hospital buzzed with a low, maddening hum that scraped against Julian’s frayed nerves. He strode down the antiseptic-smelling corridor of the maternity ward, his white shirt still bearing the dried, brownish smear of Clara’s blood—a stark, horrifying reminder of the foyer floor. He ignored the sympathetic glances from passing nurses, his singular focus pulling him inexorably toward the double doors of the delivery wing.

Before he could reach the reception desk, Dr. Sterling, a tall, graying obstetrician with kind eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, emerged from Room 4. He pulled off his surgical mask, letting it dangle from one ear as he walked toward Julian with a measured, cautious stride.

""Mr. Vance?"" Dr. Sterling asked, holding out a hand.

Julian bypassed the handshake, grabbing the doctor by the forearms instead. ""Clara. Is she alive? Is the baby okay?""

""Your wife is stable, Mr. Vance, though she is exhausted and in a state of acute shock,"" Dr. Sterling said, keeping his voice calm and grounded. ""The fall triggered rapid labor at thirty-four weeks. We had to perform an emergency cesarean section to prevent catastrophic complications from the internal trauma.""

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The room seemed to tilt slightly on its axis. ""And the baby? Did the baby survive?""

A slow, restrained smile touched the corners of Dr. Sterling’s mouth. ""You have a son. He’s small, weighing just under four pounds, and his lungs are immature, so we’ve placed him in the neonatal intensive care unit on a ventilator as a precaution. But he’s fighting, Mr. Vance. He’s remarkably strong.""

Julian closed his eyes, a wave of profound relief washing over him, instantly followed by a fierce surge of protective love that threatened to crack his composure entirely. He pressed a hand against the wall to steady himself. ""Can I see them?""

""Your wife is resting in recovery; she’ll be groggy for another hour or so from the anesthesia,"" Dr. Sterling explained gently. ""The baby is stabilized in NICU Unit B. I can take you there right now, but you’ll need to scrub in and wear protective gear.""

""Lead the way,"" Julian whispered, the rasp in his throat betraying the emotional toll of the past hour.

As they walked down the gleaming hallway toward the NICU, Julian felt the phantom weight of Clara’s fall pressing against his chest. He had saved her from the marble floor, but the war was far from over. Eleanor’s calculated malice had forced them into a nightmare, and the tiny, fragile life struggling to breathe behind the glass of an incubator upstairs was now the primary target of an unseen enemy.
