Chapter 7: Pursuit and Protocol

Sergeant Vance watched the silent exchange between the maid and the matriarch with the clinical detachment of a veteran detective. He didn't miss the subtle flinch, nor the way Eleanor’s posture relaxed the moment Chloe gave the expected answer. Vance stepped between the maid and Julian, cutting off any further interrogation before it could cross ethical lines.
""Thank you, Chloe. You can go wait in the staff quarters. Do not leave the estate,"" Vance instructed, watching the young woman scurry away down the side hallway like a frightened rabbit. He turned his attention back to Julian, his expression unreadable. ""Mr. Vance, your wife is at City General. I suggest you go to her. We’ll process this scene, run forensics on the railing brackets, and if there's evidence of tampering, rest assured we will find it.""
Julian clenched his fists so tightly his fingernails dug into his palms. He knew how this worked. Eleanor’s wealth bought a very specific brand of insurance, one that insulated her from the immediate consequences of her actions. If the forensics took days, the trail of physical evidence could be quietly sanitized by a high-priced legal team before charges were ever filed. But Clara was at the hospital, fighting through premature labor, and she needed him far more than the empty foyer did right now.
""I'm going,"" Julian said, his voice low and grating. He locked eyes with Eleanor one final time, the promise of a reckoning burning like a physical flame between them. ""If anything happens to my wife or my child, Eleanor, I won't wait for the police.""
Eleanor met his fiery gaze with a chillingly serene expression, tilting her head with aristocratic disdain. ""Go to your wife, Julian. You are overwrought and hallucinating enemies where there are only misfortunes. We will speak when you return to your senses.""
Julian turned on his heel, shoving open the front doors and stepping out into the fading afternoon light. The ambulance was long gone, its red tail-lights swallowed by the heavy traffic on the coastal highway. He vaulted into his car, the engine roaring to life with an angry growl as he slammed the gear shift into drive and tore down the private gravel driveway.

Back inside the grand foyer, Sergeant Vance watched the dust settle in the wake of Julian’s departure. He turned to his junior officer. ""Davis, get forensics up on that balcony immediately. I want every square inch dusted for prints, and I want those metal brackets unbolted and sent to the lab tonight. Something stinks in this house, and it isn't just the marble polish.""
Eleanor stood silently by the staircase, her hands folded neatly over her purple suit dress, watching the police go about their work with the serene confidence of a woman who believed herself entirely untouchable.
