Chapter 10: Awakening in the Recovery Ward

The recovery room was bathed in the soft, diffused light of a late-evening streetlamp filtering through the blinds. Clara lay propped up on a motorized bed, her face pale and drawn against the stark white pillows. The dark braided hair that had whipped around her face during the fall was now tied back in a loose, messy bun. When the door clicked open and Julian walked in, her dark eyes locked onto his, searching his face with desperate urgency.
""Julian,"" she rasped, her voice dry and cracked.
Julian hurried to the bedside, falling into the chair beside her and taking her cold, trembling hand in both of his. He pressed his lips to her knuckles, feeling the residual shivers rack her slender frame. ""I'm here, Clara. I'm right here.""
""The baby,"" she breathed, tears welling in her eyes. ""Did... did he...""
""He’s alive, Clara,"" Julian interrupted gently, a genuine smile breaking through the tension in his face. ""He’s in the NICU. He’s small, but he’s fighting. He’s breathing on his own with a little help, and his heart is strong.""
A ragged sob escaped Clara’s lips as the overwhelming weight of the day’s trauma finally crested and broke. She buried her face in her free hand, her shoulders shaking softly as Julian leaned over the bed, wrapping his arms around her upper body to hold her together. He whispered soothing platitudes into her hair, letting her grief and relief wash over him.
When her breathing finally regulated, Clara pulled back slightly, her dark eyes fixing on his with a cold, terrifying clarity. ""It wasn't an accident, Julian.""
Julian stiffened, pulling up a chair closer to the mattress. ""I know. I inspected the brackets before the police arrived. They were sawed through.""
""Eleanor,"" Clara whispered the name like a curse. ""She was standing right behind me. Just before the pain hit... it wasn't a natural contraction, Julian. I felt a sharp prick in my shoulder, like a needle. And then my legs went out from under me, and Eleanor whispered in my ear: *'You cannot bring a bastard into this house.'*""
Julian felt the blood drain entirely from his face, leaving him hollowed out and burning with a cold, nuclear fury. A needle. A chemical inducement administered right before the structural sabotage of the balcony. It wasn't just a poorly maintained house; it was a premeditated, calculated assassination attempt disguised as a tragic fall.

""She drugged you,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly whisper.
""She wants the estate unencumbered,"" Clara said, her voice steadying as adrenaline replaced her exhaustion. ""She knew our child would inherit the primary shares under the grandfather’s original trust. With both of us gone, the entire estate reverts to her absolute control.""
