Chapter 12: The Basement Vault

Officer Davis didn't waste a second. He descended the narrow, creaking wooden stairs leading from the back of the pantry down into the sprawling, subterranean labyrinth of the estate’s foundation. The air down here was cool and smelled of damp earth, aged oak, and stored vintage wine. Navigating past the iron-barred door of the wine cellar, Davis located the heavy wooden workbench tucked into a dark alcove at the far end of the corridor.

True to Chloe’s word, a heavy metal utility cabinet was bolted securely to the concrete wall. Davis tested the handle; it was locked tight with a heavy brass padlock. Drawing his baton from his tactical belt, Davis didn't bother looking for a key. With two sharp, calculated strikes against the hardened steel shackle, the padlock snapped off its mount with a metallic clatter that echoed off the damp stone walls.

He pulled the heavy metal door open, shining his flashlight into the dark interior.

The beam illuminated a neat array of tools: spare bolts, heavy-duty industrial adhesive, and resting squarely in the center on a microfiber cloth was a compact, battery-operated rotary grinding tool. Davis leaned in closer, his gloved fingers hovering over the device. The grinding bit attached to the tool was caked in microscopic silver metal shavings—the exact same alloy as the balcony railing upstairs.

Upstairs in the grand foyer, Sergeant Vance listened to the static-filled confirmation crackle over Davis’s radio. ""Got it, Sergeant. Rotary tool, metal shavings, and a spare tube of industrial-grade epoxy. It’s all here.""

""Secure the evidence and bag it,"" Vance ordered, clicking off the radio. He turned his attention back to Eleanor, who had just glided out from the formal drawing room, her dark purple suit immaculate, her expression a masterclass in haughty impatience.

""Are you officers quite finished tracking mud through my home?"" Eleanor demanded, her voice ringing with aristocratic authority. ""Or must I call my legal counsel to remind you of the boundaries of a warrantless search?""

Vance stepped toward her, his expression entirely devoid of intimidation. ""You won't need your legal counsel for a search warrant, Mrs. Vance, because Officer Davis just recovered the modified rotary tool and the epoxy used to sabotage the second-story balcony from your private basement locker.""

Eleanor’s facade finally cracked. Just for a fraction of a second, the color drained entirely from her face, her lips parting in a silent gasp as the cold armor of her control fractured under the weight of undeniable physical proof. But she recovered with terrifying speed, narrowing her eyes into slits of pure venom.

""A disgruntled maid,"" Eleanor hissed, her voice dropping its synthetic sweetness to reveal the sharp iron beneath. ""You’re listening to a hysterical servant looking to cover her own negligence.""

""The maid told us where to look, Mrs. Vance, but the forensics team will pull your fingerprints directly off the tool handle,"" Vance said, resting his hand on the holster at his hip. ""And right now, you are officially under arrest for the attempted murder of Clara Vance and the endangerment of an unborn child.""
