Chapter 15

The grand opening of the Downtown Community Center and Botanical Rooftop was a triumph of light, space, and human connection. One year after standing in her living room clutching a smartphone displaying a painful tropical honeymoon photo, Maya stood on the sunlit glass atrium of her finished architectural masterpiece. The space was alive with the murmurs of families, artists, children playing near the indoor fountains, and city officials admiring the seamless integration of modern urban design and natural botanical life.

Dressed in an elegant emerald-green jumpsuit that caught the natural light pouring through the overhead glass panels, Maya looked out over the crowd with a profound sense of peace and accomplishment. The past was not forgotten—it was simply the rough bedrock upon which her actual life had been built. Brad and Lily had eventually returned from their disastrous trip, married in a quiet, strained ceremony in front of a half-empty room, only to divorce six months later. Maya hadn’t attended, hadn’t cried, and hadn’t looked back. She had been far too busy designing her future.

A warm hand slipped gently into hers, breaking her train of thought. Maya turned to see Liam standing beside her, wearing a tailored dark suit that suited him remarkably well, though he still wore his signature easy smile and warm, devoted expression.

“You’ve been staring at the skylight for five minutes,” Liam teased softly, squeezing her hand. “Are you critiquing your own structural engineering, or are you just admiring how many people you made happy today?”

“Both,” Maya laughed, leaning her shoulder against his. “I was just thinking about where I was sitting a year ago today. On the couch, holding a phone, crying over a nonrefundable ticket to a tropical beach I didn’t even want to visit.”

Liam’s expression softened, his dark eyes filled with deep affection. “You thought your life was ending. But it was just the prologue.”

“You were right,” Maya whispered, looking up at him with absolute clarity in her dark eyes. “I hadn’t even seen the best part.”

Across the atrium, the afternoon sunlight streamed through the massive glass panels, casting brilliant geometric patterns across the polished floor. Children laughed near the rooftop gardens, and the vibrant hum of a community thriving in its own light filled the air. Maya took a deep breath of the fresh, floral-scented breeze, completely at home in her skin, her work, and her heart. With Liam’s hand locked tightly in hers, she stepped forward into the bright, unwritten horizon of their tomorrow, ready to design every single moment.
