Chapter 10

The afternoon sun cast long golden streaks across the hardwood floor as Maya meticulously adjusted the digital rendering of her community center rooftop garden on her monitor. The silence of the apartment was peaceful, stripped of the lingering static of Lily’s frantic phone call from the tropics. She took a slow sip of her coffee, the rich, dark roast grounding her senses.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed sharply on the desk. This time, the caller ID displayed a local municipal area code with a formal prefix: City Department of Urban Development.
Maya’s hand froze inches from the mouse. Her heart skipped a beat, hammering against her ribs with sudden, breathless intensity. She swallowed hard, wiped her palms against her leggings, and swiped to accept the call, pressing the phone to her ear.
“This is Maya Vance,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady.
“Good afternoon, Ms. Vance,” a crisp, professional voice responded on the other end. “This is Director Henderson from the Municipal Revitalization Committee. I’m calling regarding your submission for the Downtown Community Center and Botanical Rooftop project, Grant Reference Four-Four-Eight-Two-One.”
Maya held her breath, the room around her fading into absolute silence.
“We have completed the initial architectural review and public interest assessment phases,” Director Henderson continued, his tone formal yet carrying an unmistakably positive cadence. “Out of nearly two hundred proposals submitted across the state, your design was one of three selected for the final pitch presentation before the city council next Tuesday morning.”
A wave of dizzying relief and triumphant joy washed over Maya. Her knees felt weak, and she gripped the edge of her desk for balance.
“Th-thank you,” Maya managed to say, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. “I am honored. I’m ready for the presentation.”
“Excellent,” the Director replied. “You’ll receive an email shortly with the scheduling details, technical requirements, and format guidelines. Congratulations on an exceptional concept, Ms. Vance. We look forward to seeing your vision in person.”
The line clicked dead. Maya slowly lowered the phone, staring blankly at the screen displaying her architectural renders. The months of self-doubt, the pain of the breakup, the lingering humiliation of being discarded—all of it seemed to evaporate in an instant, replaced by the blazing spark of professional validation. She had done this. On her own terms. Without compromise.
Without thinking, she picked up her phone again and dialed Liam’s number. He answered on the second ring, his voice brisk and alert.
“Maya? Everything okay?”
“I’m presenting,” she blurted out, a laugh bubbling up from her chest and spilling over into a bright, joyful sound. “The community center grant. My design made the final three. I have to pitch to the city council next Tuesday.”

On the other end of the line, Liam went completely silent for a fraction of a second before a low, triumphant shout of celebration echoed through the receiver.
“I knew it!” Liam yelled, his voice thick with genuine pride. “I told you that you were going to bounce back! Tuesday morning, you said? Clear your schedule, because starting right now, we are building the best pitch deck this city has ever seen.”
