Chapter 1

The bright midday sunlight spilled relentlessly across the hardwood floor of the living room, highlighting every speck of dust dancing in the air. For Maya, the light felt less like warmth and more like an interrogation. She sat curled on the edge of the large plaid-patterned couch, her dark hair falling in tangled strands across her shoulders. Her face was tear-stained, the skin around her dark eyes raw and swollen from hours of quiet, desperate sobbing. In her trembling hands, she held her smartphone like a fragile lifeline, though the glowing screen only served to rip open the wound anew.

Across from her sat Liam, a thirty-five-year-old Caucasian man with dark wavy hair and a neatly trimmed beard. Dressed in a simple white t-shirt and dark trousers, he leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. His expression was a mixture of profound sympathy and helpless concern. He watched her shoulders heave with another shuddering breath, the silence between them heavy with unspoken grief. He shifted slightly, the cushions rustling softly, before breaking the heavy quiet with a voice kept deliberately gentle.

“So, how are you holding up?” Liam asked, his tone laced with a deep, aching tenderness that acknowledged the absurdity of the question even as he asked it.

Maya did not answer immediately. She swallowed hard, her throat burning, and lifted the phone so the screen caught the glaring light. The display showed an Instagram post: a sun-drenched tropical beach, white sand stretching into impossibly turquoise water, and two figures embracing under a palm tree. It was Brad, her former fiancé, and Lily, her younger sister, smiling broadly into the camera lens as if they hadn’t just shattered her entire world.

“They went on your honeymoon?!” Liam murmured, reading the caption before she could even form the words.

“Tickets are nonrefundable,” Maya whispered, her voice cracking with a fresh wave of devastation. “So Brad took my sister on my dream vacation.”

Liam listened with an intense, shocked expression, leaning in closer as Maya struggled to regain control of her breathing.

“The one I spent months planning down to the very last detail,” Maya continued, her voice trembling with indignation and sorrow. “So I’m sitting here, stuck on my couch watching sad movies and bawling my eyes out. How is that fair?”

Liam looked directly into her tear-filled eyes with a serious, encouraging expression while she cried softly into her dark grey sweatshirt. “Hey, I know things look bleak right now,” he said firmly. “But you’re going to bounce back from this. You haven’t even seen the best part.”
