Chapter 13

The twenty-four hours following the city council pitch felt like moving through deep water. Maya kept herself busy by organizing her digital drafting files and cleaning her apartment from top to bottom, refusing to let herself obsess over the incoming email notifications. Yet, every time her phone buzzed on the kitchen island, her pulse spiked involuntarily.

Liam had stayed with her through the evening, cooking a simple dinner of garlic pasta and sharing a bottle of crisp white wine while they debated the hypothetical layouts of future community projects. There was no pressure, no nervous pacing—just the easy, comfortable rhythm of two people who understood each other’s silences as well as their words. When Liam finally kissed her goodnight at the door, promising to return the next afternoon before the announcement, the apartment felt warm rather than empty.

By 2:00 PM the following day, Maya sat at her desk with a cup of chamomile tea, staring at her laptop screen. Her inbox was open. The cursor blinked rhythmically.

At exactly 2:15 PM, a new email appeared at the top of the list. Sender: Municipal Revitalization Committee - Office of the Director. Subject: Grant Award Decision - Downtown Community Center Project.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. Her fingers hovered over the trackpad. She didn’t rush; instead, she took one slow, deep breath, centered herself, and clicked the message open.

The text was brief, crisp, and official.

Dear Ms. Vance, We are pleased to inform you that following a unanimous vote by the City Council committee, your proposal for the Downtown Community Center and Botanical Rooftop has been selected as the official recipient of the 2025 Municipal Revitalization Grant. Funding will be disbursed beginning next month to commence architectural planning and zoning approval.

Maya stared at the screen, reading the words three times to ensure her brain wasn’t hallucinating out of sheer desire. A hot, overwhelming wave of emotion broke over her—not the devastated sobbing of weeks past, but a fierce, triumphant cry of pure joy. She slammed her laptop shut, jumped up from her chair, and let out a triumphant cheer that echoed off the living room walls.

She grabbed her phone, dialing Liam’s number before she even reached the couch. He answered on the first ring, breathless as if he had been running.

“Did it come?” Liam asked, his voice tight with anticipation.

May you like

“We won,” Maya shouted, tears of pure happiness spilling over her eyelashes. “We actually won, Liam! The grant is ours!”

On the other end of the line, Liam let out a booming laugh of sheer exultation. “I told you! I told you you were going to bounce back, Maya! That’s your city now!”
