Chapter 9: Richard’s Ultimatum

When Elena returned to the penthouse apartment she shared with Richard, the place felt cavernous and unnervingly quiet. Her luggage had not been unpacked; instead, two large leather suitcases sat neatly zipped near the entryway, signaling a silent decree from her husband. Richard was sitting at the sleek glass dining table, reviewing a thick packet of legal documents with his private counsel, a sharp-looking woman named Diane. As Elena walked in, Richard looked up, his expression a complicated mix of professional detachment and lingering personal grief. He dismissed the lawyer with a subtle wave of his hand, leaving the two of them alone in the sterile, modern space.

"Diane has drawn up the preliminary papers for an immediate annulment," Richard said evenly, gesturing to the documents on the table. "Given the circumstances, we can file it under fraudulent misrepresentation of character. It will keep most of the details out of the public eye if we move quickly." Elena walked slowly over to the table, her fingers tracing the edge of the crisp white paper. She felt a strange sense of calm washing over her. The frantic need to maintain her flawless facade had completely evaporated, leaving her feeling lighter, even if her personal life was lying in ruins.

"Did you read the confession I gave Clara?" Elena asked softly. Richard paused, his pen hovering just above the paper. "Clara’s lawyer sent a copy to our corporate office this morning. It outlines everything in explicit detail. The university is already reviewing her reinstatement." Richard looked up, his eyes searching Elena’s face for any sign of defiance. "You just handed your sister the ammunition to destroy our reputation completely, Elena. Why?" Elena offered a faint, melancholy smile. "Because for the first time in my life, Richard, the truth matters more to me than winning. If you need to annul this marriage to protect your name and your family's foundation, I won't fight you on it."
