Chapter 6: The Unraveling Alliances

By midnight, the Grandview Hotel ballroom was entirely empty of guests, save for a few exhausted members of the bridal party tasked with gathering forgotten gifts and centerpieces. Word of the scandalous interruption had spread rapidly through social media channels, fueled by a couple of opportunistic influencers who had managed to slip into the reception. Richard’s father, a formidable patriarch who had built a real estate empire on a foundation of unblemished public reputation, sat in the center table’s mahogany chair like a judge presiding over a tribunal. Richard stood beside him, while Elena sat opposite them, feeling like a defendant awaiting sentencing in a high-stakes court.

"The board of directors is already calling my cell phone," the elder Mr. Sterling said, his voice rumbling with quiet fury. "A scandal of this magnitude cannot simply be swept under the rug with a clever public relations statement. The foundation’s corporate partners pride themselves on integrity, and marrying a woman who sabotaged her own sibling for professional gain makes our entire family look complicit." Richard looked at his father, then cast a brief, conflicted glance toward Elena. Despite the emotional shock, a protective instinct still warred with his sense of personal betrayal. "Dad, whatever Elena did, she did as a college student under immense familial pressure. We need to look at how we handle the fallout without destroying her entire professional life overnight."

Elena looked up, genuinely surprised by Richard’s defense. She had expected him to demand an immediate annulment and lock her out of his life before the clock struck midnight. "I don't want your protection if it requires you to lie or compromise your own values, Richard," Elena interjected, her tone firm. "I made my bed when I chose to hide the truth. If the foundation needs to distance itself from me, I will step down from my advisory position immediately." The elder Mr. Sterling grunted, unimpressed by her display of nobility. "Stepping down is the bare minimum, Elena. The real question is how we address Clara. That young woman has a legitimate grievance, and if she decides to take this to civil court or the media, the ensuing PR nightmare will cost us millions."
