Chapter 5: The Digital Confession

The private VIP lounge smelled faintly of expensive leather and leftover cigar smoke. Richard sat heavily in an oversized wingback chair, staring down at the laptop resting on the low mahogany coffee table. Clara had refused to enter the room, retreating with Lily to the lobby, leaving Elena and Richard alone to confront the digital wreckage of their relationship. Elena stood near the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the city skyline twinkling in the cool night air, her white veil resting discarded on a side table like a fallen cloud. The silence in the room was heavy, punctuated only by the soft click of computer keys as Richard opened the primary audio file.

A wave of static hissed from the laptop speakers, followed immediately by a younger, sharper version of Elena’s voice. The recording captured a tense phone call between Elena and a university administrator, detailing a fabricated plagiarism charge against Clara. The words were damning, delivered with a chilling lack of emotion that highlighted a side of Elena her new husband had never suspected existed. Richard listened for three excruciating minutes before pressing the spacebar, cutting off the audio mid-sentence. He rubbed his eyes with his palms, letting out a long, exhausted sigh that seemed to drain all the remaining air from the room.

"Is it true?" Richard asked quietly, not looking up. "Every single word of it." Elena turned away from the window, her voice steady now, stripped of the defensive bravado she had worn in the hallway. She walked over to the opposite chair and sat down, folding her hands in her lap. "I was terrified of failing, Richard. My father made it clear that love was conditional on absolute perfection. When Clara showed more natural talent in our research department, I panicked. I framed her to secure my own placement. I have lived with that cowardice every single day since." Richard finally raised his head, his eyes searching her face for any sign of genuine remorse versus mere regret at being caught. "And you never thought to tell me? Not once during the entire two years we were dating?" Elena shook her head slowly. "I was a coward. I was afraid that if you knew the real, flawed, ruthless person beneath the polished surface, you would walk away. And look—I was right."
