Chapter 4: The Hallway Confrontation

Leaving the stunned crowd murmuring in the main hall, Elena swept past Richard and pushed through the heavy wooden side doors into the quiet, carpeted corridor. The harsh fluorescent lighting of the backstage hallway felt blinding after the romantic amber glow of the ballroom. A few yards away, Clara stood with her arms crossed, her face flushed with a mixture of adrenaline and vindictive triumph. Little Lily trailed closely behind her mother, clutching a small juice box that a hotel staff member had evidently handed her to keep her occupied. Elena marched toward her sister, the heavy layers of her wedding gown rustling angrily with every stride.

"What in the world is wrong with you?" Elena hissed, keeping her voice pitched low to avoid drawing the attention of the catering staff passing by with empty trays. "Ruining my wedding? Using a seven-year-old child as a messenger for your petty vendetta?" Clara didn’t flinch. Instead, she stepped forward, her eyes flashing with years of accumulated resentment. "Petty?" Clara shot back, her voice shaking with restrained fury. "You ruined my life, Elena. You stole my scholarship, you forged my signature on those disciplinary forms, and you let me take the fall so you could walk away clean and take that fancy corporate job. I spent years scraping by while you played the golden girl."

Elena felt a defensive wall shoot up, though the familiar guilt gnawed at her stomach. "That was almost a decade ago, Clara! We were kids making stupid, desperate mistakes under immense pressure from our parents." Clara laughed bitterly, a harsh sound that echoed off the floral wallpaper. "Mistakes? No, Elena, that was calculated sociopathy. And I didn't come here to ruin your wedding just for fun. I came because Richard’s family foundation is currently funding the very academic board that blacklisted me. People deserve to know who they are welcoming into their inner circle."

As if summoned by the mention of his name, heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor. Richard rounded the corner, his tuxedo jacket unbuttoned, his expression a mask of cold determination. He looked from Elena to Clara, taking in the flushed faces and the tense body language. "The guests are demanding an explanation," Richard said, his voice devoid of warmth. "And quite frankly, so am I. Who are you, and what is on that drive?" Clara pulled a duplicate flash drive from her pocket, tossing it effortlessly through the air toward Richard. He caught it instinctively, his eyes fixed on the small black device that held the power to demolish their future.
