Chapter 9: The Descent to Sector Nine

With the control room doors securely locked behind him, Leo studied the digital tablet’s glowing screen. The floor plan of Sector Nine was marked with warning hatches and biohazard symbols, but his father’s handwritten notes overlaid the digital map, correcting the false designations to reveal a hidden residential vault beneath the city's oldest water reservoir. He grabbed a heavy-duty flashlight from the control desk, clipped it to his dark hoodie, and exited through a secondary maintenance hatch at the back of the room that bypassed the main industrial sector entirely.
The maintenance tunnel was narrow, lined with thick insulated pipes that hissed softly with the transfer of steam and water. The air was thick and humid, fogging up Leo’s breath as he moved at a brisk pace. The white deer led the way, its ethereal light cutting through the steam like a lighthouse beacon in a dense fog. Every few yards, the walls bore ancient structural stamps from the early twentieth century, slowly giving way to raw, unexcavated bedrock. The subterranean world was shifting from an industrial hazard zone back into a silent, forgotten sanctuary of earth and stone.

After a twenty-minute descent down a series of spiral maintenance ladders, the narrow pipe corridor opened abruptly into a heavy steel airlock chamber. A large warning sign bolted to the heavy circular hatch read: 'SECTOR NINE - RESTRICTED ACCESS - STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY COMPROMISED.' The red warning light above the hatch pulsed lazily in the dim light. The white deer stopped directly in front of the wheel valve, turning its head to look at Leo with an expression of profound calm. The boy understood; this was the final barrier standing between him and the truth about his father’s disappearance.
Leo stepped up to the massive wheel valve, grabbing the rusted iron handles with both hands. His muscles strained as he threw his weight into the turn, the heavy internal gears groaning in protest before finally giving way with a loud, satisfying crack. He spun the wheel rapidly, disengaging the pressure locks one by one until the heavy hatch drifted open a fraction of an inch, releasing a hiss of cool, cedar-scented air. Pulling the door wide, Leo stepped through the threshold into Sector Nine, his flashlight cutting through the gloom to reveal a space unlike anything he had seen yet.
