Chapter 8: The Catwalk Ascent

The industrial sector stretched out like a cavernous steel canyon, the floor dropping away into a massive excavation pit where modern pile drivers and pneumatic drills rested in the mud. Leo gripped the cold railing of the rusted metal staircase that snaked upward along the concrete wall, his scuffed sneakers finding traction on the grooved steps. Above him, the ethereal white deer bounded effortlessly up the vertical climb, its glowing hooves leaving faint trails of sparkling light that dissipated into the damp industrial air. Leo focused entirely on the rhythm of his breathing, forcing down the dizziness that threatened to overwhelm him as he gained altitude above the dark pit.
Reaching the top of the stairs, he stepped onto a narrow catwalk that spanned the width of the cavern, connecting the excavation side to a reinforced control room built directly into the rock face. Through the wire-reinforced glass windows of the control booth, Leo could see Bank of monitors displaying live feeds of the upper city streets, alongside blueprints and digital tablets flashing warning codes in amber and red. The white deer stood directly in front of the heavy steel door of the control room, its glowing antlers brushing against the keypad lock mounted beside the handle.

Leo approached cautiously, keeping his weight balanced on the vibrating metal grating. When he stood beside the deer, the animal lowered its head, touching its glowing snout against the numeric keypad. A soft chime echoed from the lock, and the screen shifted from a blinking red error to a steady, welcoming green. With a mechanical click, the heavy door unlatched. Leo pulled it open and stepped inside, the warm hum of server racks and electronic equipment washing over him. The room was untouched by the dampness of the tunnels, smelling faintly of coffee and ozone.
On the central console lay a digital tablet displaying an open structural schematic of the entire underground network, with a blinking marker indicating a signal source located in the lowest sub-basement—Sector Nine. Beside the tablet rested a handwritten sticky note with a security override code and a brief message: 'If you've made it this far, you carry the spark. Find the core.' Leo typed the code into the main console, locking the control room doors from the inside to buy himself time. He picked up the tablet, his mind racing as he mapped out the fastest route to Sector Nine, knowing his time underground was quickly running out.
