Chapter 13: The Digital Strike

Arthur slammed his hand against the heavy metal casing of the exterior data terminal, snapping the rusted padlock with a swift, practiced blow from a heavy wrench he had carried from the sanctuary. The metal door swung open to reveal a blinking interface panel humming with residual electrical current. Without hesitation, Leo stepped forward, unzipped his dark hoodie, and pulled out the metal flash drive. With steady, precise fingers, he inserted the drive into the primary USB port of the terminal. The interface screen flickered violently, flashing a red warning before shifting to a steady, glowing blue as it recognized the master encryption keys.

'Upload initiated,' a synthesized voice droned softly from the terminal's built-in speaker. A progress bar appeared on the screen, slowly filling from left to right as gigabytes of corrupt municipal files, financial records, and structural blueprints transferred securely to the federal oversight network. Behind them, another deep rumble shook the bedrock, and a plume of dust billowed from the upper ventilation shafts. The industrial excavation pit was settling dangerously, threatening to shear the suspension cables of the catwalk if they didn't move immediately. Arthur kept his eyes fixed on the progress bar, his hand resting reassuringly on his son’s shoulder.

'Seventy-five percent,' Arthur muttered, the green light from the monitor casting stark shadows across his weathered face. Suddenly, the control room’s remote alarm klaxons blared to life overhead, filling the cavern with a piercing, rhythmic screech. Red emergency strobe lights began to flash violently, indicating that the municipal network had detected the unauthorized data transfer and was attempting to deploy an automated firewall lockdown. 'They’re trying to sever the connection!' Leo cried out, his eyes widening as the progress bar stuttered and froze at eighty-nine percent.

Without missing a beat, Leo reached out and smashed his fist down on the physical override switch located beneath the terminal screen—a trick his father had shown him in the repair sketches. The terminal sparked briefly, overriding the automated firewall command with a hardwired circuit bypass. The progress bar surged forward: ninety-five, ninety-eight, one hundred percent. 'Upload complete. Secure connection terminated,' the synthesized voice announced calmly over the wailing sirens. Leo snatched the flash drive from the port just as the terminal screen went completely dark, permanently severing the data link before the municipal servers could trace the signal source.
