Chapter 7: The Blueprint of Truth

Determined to unlock the bulkhead door and find his father, Leo began searching the cluttered surface of the oak desk. He brushed aside rusted compasses and brass gears, his eyes scanning the dense stacks of architectural drawings. Beneath a heavy leather drafting mat, he uncovered a thick manila folder labeled with a single word in his father’s handwriting: 'EXODUS.' He flipped the cover open, revealing a series of detailed schematics detailing a master control valve located on the other side of the bulkhead. The notes explained that the city's modern expansion was intentionally rerouting toxic runoff directly into these historical foundations, threatening to erase the city's true origins forever.

A heavy clanking sound echoed from beyond the bulkhead door, followed by the muffled rumble of heavy machinery vibrating through the bedrock. Panic flickered in Leo’s chest—someone else was down here. The developers weren't just planning to seal the tunnels; they were actively drilling to destroy the structural archives before anyone could expose their illegal urban zoning violations. He looked at the white deer, which stood patiently by the heavy door, its glowing antlers pulsing in rhythm with the distant mechanical vibrations. The creature seemed to urge him onward, its gaze steady and resolute.

Leo grabbed a heavy iron wrench from the workbench and tucked it into the pocket of his dark hoodie. He scooped up the leather-bound journal and slid the 'EXODUS' folder securely under his arm. Taking a deep breath, he walked across the stone floor toward the bulkhead. As he drew closer, the metallic smell of hydraulic fluid and fresh concrete dust grew stronger, cutting through the clean scent of the subterranean grotto. He pushed the heavy steel door wider, stepping through the threshold into a massive, industrial sector of the underground complex that looked like an active construction site.

Bright halogen work lights glared from temporary scaffolding, illuminating towering concrete pillars and modern excavation equipment abandoned for the night. The turquoise glow of the deer cut sharply through the harsh white glare of the work lights, casting long, dancing shadows across the rough industrial walls. Leo stayed low, ducking behind large spools of thick copper cabling as he navigated the maze of modern machinery. He needed to reach the master control room overlooking the excavation pit before the work crews returned at dawn, and the glowing deer was moving purposefully toward a rusted metal catwalk suspended high above the pit.
