The Underworld Forge

The subterranean cavern was a nightmare of Victorian industrial tyranny.
Vast iron catwalks spanned over glowing rivers of molten slag. Below, hundreds of laborers—men and women dressed in tattered grey canvas—shoveled coal, poured crucible molds, and hauled iron ingots in eerie, unbroken synchronization.
None of them spoke. None of them looked up. High above the floor, giant bronze acoustic horns mounted on the stone pillars emitted a continuous, low-frequency hum that vibrated the very marrow of Eliza’s bones.
"The acoustic grid," Eliza whispered, feeling a dull ache blossom behind her eyes. "It's keeping their nervous systems locked in a state of compliant hypnosis."
Eli nodded grimly. He led her along the shadowed maintenance catwalks toward the central steam distribution hub.
