The Healing Touch

In the weeks that followed, Eliza turned the Blackwood town hall and her father’s old clinic into a recovery sanctuary.
With Eli assisting by her side, Eliza performed delicate microsurgeries on dozens of victims, carefully removing the silver acoustic cylinders from their ears and dressing their wounds with soothing herbal compresses.
Families from across the territory arrived by train, searching for lost brothers, fathers, and daughters who had been declared dead years before. Joyous reunions filled the town square, washing away the decades of dread that had hung over the valley.
Eli’s recovery was also taking root. Without the constant acoustic pressure inflaming his nervous system, his throat began to heal under Eliza’s treatments of wild honey, sage, and comfrey root.
One quiet evening by the hearth in Eliza’s restored cabin, Eli sat watching her brew evening tea.
He took a slow, deep breath, struggling against the tight scarring of his vocal cords.
"E... li... za," he rasped, the sound rough and gravelly, but undeniably human.

Eliza froze, the teapot trembling in her hand. She turned around slowly, tears spilling over her lashes.
Eli smiled—a pure, warm, unburdened smile. "Thank... you."
