The Silent Code

By the second hour after midnight, Eli’s fever had abated, but his urgency only mounted. He pulled a worn tin box from beneath the hearthstone where he had hidden his few belongings. Inside lay four more identical silver cylinders, each wrapped in oiled parchment, each extracted during past agonizing episodes when the pressure in his skull became unbearable.
He laid them out in a straight line before Eliza.
With trembling hands, Eli used the pencil to draw a crude diagram of the human inner ear, sketching the tiny auditory bones. Beside it, he drew a small bellows and a tuning fork.
Acoustic resonance, Eliza realized aloud, reading the notes he rapidly scribbled. They were transmitting high-frequency sub-audible pulses through the bedrock. That's how the foundry controlled the workers without shouting a single order.
Eli tapped the silver shard she had just pulled from his flesh. He wrote:
When the horn blows at dawn, the device expands with the temperature drop. It causes blindness and paralysis if you try to speak out or run. That is why I had to tear my own voice away.
Tears pricked Eliza’s eyes. He had intentionally scorched his throat to avoid screaming the triggers that activated the implants. The sheer, terrifying willpower of a man choosing muteness over total enslavement struck her like a physical blow.
"Who else is down there, Eli?" she whispered.

Eli held up both hands, spreading all ten fingers, then closed them and opened them again.
Over two hundred men and women. Reported dead, lost in blizzards, or forgotten.
