By the summer of 1895, Blackwood Valley had transformed.
The federal courts seized Mercer’s ill-gotten fortune and the foundry properties. Under a historic settlement championed by the territorial governor, the ironworks was reorganized into a worker-owned cooperative foundry, producing materials not for forced conquest, but for schools, bridges, and local agriculture.
The high stone walls and patrol towers were dismantled, their bricks used to pave a wide public road connecting the mountain settlements.
Eliza was officially appointed the director of the Thorne Memorial Medical Center, establishing a pioneering research center dedicated to neurological rehabilitation and occupational safety.
Eli, now able to speak with a low, thoughtful voice, became the lead engineer of the cooperative. His intimate knowledge of the machinery, combined with his fierce dedication to human safety, made the Blackwood Foundry a model of ethical industry celebrated across the nation.
Every Sunday, they walked together up the mountain path to Dr. Thorne’s gravesite, placing fresh bouquets of mountain lilies against the polished granite headstone.
