Chapter 7

Sirens began to wail in the distance, faint at first, but growing steadily louder as they cut through the quiet suburban afternoon. The sound made Arthur flinch, his eyes darting toward the front window where the bright sunlight suddenly felt like a spotlight exposing his crimes. Panic flickered across his face, replacing the arrogant defiance he had worn like armor for so many years.

"You called them," Arthur accused, glaring at Evan with a sudden flash of malice.

"I didn't have to," Evan replied calmly, shifting her weight on the crutches. "The system was programmed to alert the authorities if my biometrics didn't check in after forty-eight hours. You underestimated how thorough she was before she confronted you, Arthur. She knew you were stealing from the foundation accounts, and she knew you’d resort to violence when she threatened to expose you."

Leo listened to the exchange, pieces of conversations he had overheard through heating vents and half-closed doors finally falling into place. The late-night arguments, the whispered phone calls about missing funds, the sudden disappearance of his mother—it all traced back to greed. His father wasn't a grieving widower; he was a desperate criminal who had turned their home into a cage and a crematorium.

Claire walked over to the entryway, her movements mechanical, and pulled the front door open wider to let the fresh air clear the scent of lilies and ash. She refused to look at Arthur as she spoke. "I want you out of this house before the police arrive, Arthur. I won't lie for you anymore. I won't let you drag Leo down with you."

"Claire, wait, we can fix this—" Arthur stepped toward her, desperation dripping from every word.

"Don't touch me," she snapped, stepping back with a look of pure disgust.

Leo watched his parents sever the last ties of their marriage with chilling efficiency. He felt strangely hollow, devoid of the overwhelming sadness that had consumed him just moments ago. The arrival of the police cruisers turning onto their street signaled the end of the deception and the beginning of a long, painful road toward healing. Evan reached out a reassuring hand, gently resting it on Leo's messy light brown hair. They stood together in the doorway, battered and scarred, watching the external world arrive to dismantle the prison Arthur had so carefully built around them.
