Chapter 13

While Leo and Evan settled into their new rhythm by the coast, the legal system was methodically dismantling Arthur Vance's carefully guarded empire. Without the cushion of fraud and the protection of fabricated narratives, Arthur’s trial moved with terrifying speed. Federal prosecutors presented overwhelming evidence recovered from the hidden wooden box and the forensic analysis of the fireplace ash, leaving his defense attorneys with virtually no ground to stand upon.

Detective Miller called Evan one afternoon, his voice crackling slightly over the weak cellular connection provided by the coastal towers. He informed her that the grand jury had returned a unanimous indictment on all counts, ensuring that Arthur would spend decades behind bars with no possibility of early parole. The verdict wasn't a cause for celebration, but rather a profound sense of closure, sealing the vault on a chapter of their lives that had brought so much unnecessary pain.

Evan hung up the phone and walked out onto the small front porch where Leo was sitting on the wooden deck, watching the rolling fog slowly blanket the pine trees. She sat down beside him on the bench, her cane resting against the railing.

"It's over, Leo," she said quietly. "The trial is done. Arthur has been sentenced."

Leo stopped carving a small piece of driftwood he had found on the beach earlier that morning. He looked out toward the horizon, where the gray fog was beginning to thin under the pressure of the midday sun. He didn't feel a rush of triumph or anger; he just felt a quiet, profound sense of release.

"Good," Leo said simply, turning back to his woodcarving with steady, deliberate movements. "Let's leave it behind us."

Evan nodded in agreement, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. The past could not be erased, but it no longer held the power to dictate their future. Arthur was confined to a world of gray concrete and steel bars, while they were free to breathe the clean ocean air and watch the tides turn against the shore. The shadow had finally lifted, leaving behind a clear path forward under an open, expansive sky.
