Chapter 5

Evan pulled back slightly, holding Leo by his shoulders. She looked down into his tear-filled hazel eyes, reading the profound emotional distress written across his youthful features. The boy’s breathing was ragged, his chest rising and falling beneath the dark blue zip-up hoodie. He lifted the cracked smartphone higher, turning the screen toward Evan and the frozen adults across the room. The display clearly showed an incoming call screen, the caller ID flashing a name that sent a chill through the entire house.
"Dad fueled it from the fireplace!" Leo said tearfully, his voice cracking with a heartbreaking blend of betrayal and absolute horror.

Arthur’s knees seemed to buckle slightly at the accusation. The lie he had spent days fabricating—the official story of a tragic, accidental house fire that had supposedly consumed the physical evidence and the truth—collapsed entirely. The white decorative urn on the floor wasn't filled with the remains of a beloved mother who had passed away in her sleep; it was a clever prop, a decoy meant to fool the authorities and close the book on a violent crime.
Evan stared at the phone screen, then slowly raised her gaze to meet Arthur’s terrified expression. The pieces of the puzzle clicked into place with horrifying precision. Arthur hadn't just covered up a tragedy; he had orchestrated a monstrous deception, using the hearth of their own home to destroy what remained of the woman who had tried to expose his financial ruin and betrayal. Claire turned her back on her husband, the final thread of her loyalty snapping under the weight of the revelation. Leo stood beside Evan, no longer trembling with fear, but vibrating with a quiet, righteous fury. The truth was out in the open now, dirty and gray like the ashes dusting their shoes. There was nowhere left for Arthur to hide, and the phone in Leo's hand continued to ring, summoning a reckoning that could no longer be delayed or denied by anyone in the house.
