Chapter 10

The following morning brought a pale, watery sunlight that filtered through the cracked windows of the master bedroom. The house was dead silent, save for the hum of a refrigerator and the occasional creak of settling wood. Claire had spent the night in the guest room, refusing to share the space she had once believed was a sanctuary. Downstairs, investigators had finished their initial sweep, leaving behind official seals on doors and a lingering aura of clinical tragedy.
Upstairs, Leo stood in his mother’s former studio, a sunlit space that Arthur had spent months trying to purge of her presence. Canvases had been turned against walls, and drawers had been emptied. But Arthur had missed a small, locked wooden box tucked away in the back of the bottom shelf. Using a small brass key he had found in the desk drawer, Leo clicked the lock open and lifted the lid.
Inside lay journals, loose photographs, and a backup flash drive labeled with his mother's handwriting. These were the items Arthur had failed to locate before he panicked and resorted to arson. Leo carefully picked up a photograph showing his mother and Evan smiling together on a hiking trip, both of them looking genuinely happy, free from the constraints of the suburban prison Arthur had constructed.
Evan appeared in the doorway, moving carefully on her crutches, her bandaged leg making a soft rustling sound against the carpet. She paused, looking at the open box in Leo’s hands, and a bittersweet smile touched her lips. "She kept those," Evan whispered, stepping closer to rest a hand on his messy light brown hair. "She knew he was watching her, so she hid them where she thought he’d never look."
"We need to give these to Detective Miller," Leo said, his voice steady and resolute. "Everything he needs to prove what Arthur did to the foundation and to her... it's right here."

Evan nodded, pulling the boy into a brief, gentle side-hug. "You're incredibly brave, Leo. More than you know."
Packing the contents into a sturdy cardboard box, Leo felt a profound sense of closure beginning to take root. They weren't just gathering evidence; they were reclaiming his mother's memory from the ashes of lies. Every photograph and journal entry was a brick in the foundation of their new reality, proving that truth, no matter how deeply buried or burned, always finds a way back to the surface.
