Chapter 9: Ghosts of the Past

The word Julian seemed to suck all the oxygen out of the hallway, leaving Elena gasping slightly as she processed the impossible reality of it. Five years of silence, five years of believing that the family black sheep had permanently severed ties and relocated across the Atlantic Ocean, all washed away by a single digital handshake at the estate's perimeter gate.
"Julian is dead," Elena said automatically, though the conviction in her own voice was faltering. "Or at least, that’s what your corporate counsel assured us when we finalized the buyout of his estate shares and restructured the Heaven Trust Fund."
"Lawyers lie, Elena, and corporations bury liabilities," Arthur said grimly, his hand sliding from her shoulder to grip his own jawline as he paced the length of the runner rug. "Julian never cashed out his settlement check. We found that out during the audit two years ago, but my father told us to let sleeping dogs lie. He said Julian had chosen his path of self-destruction and that the estate was better off without his erratic temperament."
"And now he’s back," Elena finished quietly, her hand instinctively pressing against the pocket of her white dress where she had hidden Maria’s burner phone. "He didn't just come back to visit, Arthur. He came back to reclaim the land, the trust fund, and everything your father built. Maria was just his inside operative, planting the digital breadcrumbs and executing the transfers."
Arthur stopped pacing, his gray suit jacket swinging slightly as he squared his shoulders. A cold, steely resolve replaced the shock on his face. "If Julian wants his inheritance back, he’s going to have to face me directly, not hide behind hired help and forged documents in the middle of the night."
"Arthur, wait," Elena said, stepping in front of him to block his path toward the grand staircase. "You can't just walk out into the dark unarmed and confront him. If he’s desperate enough to orchestrate an offshore financial siphon, he’s desperate enough to do anything. We need to call the state police right now."

"There’s no time for the police," Arthur argued, his voice hardening. "By the time county deputies navigate these private rural roads, Julian will have accessed the master terminal in the main barn, wiped the local servers, and vanished back across the state line with the physical deeds to the north pasture. This is my land, Elena. My family's legacy. I’m ending this tonight."
Before Elena could stop him, Arthur turned and jogged down the stairs toward the foyer, his heavy footfalls echoing loudly against the checkered marble floor. Left alone in the quiet hallway, Elena listened as the heavy front oak door unlocked, swung open, and slammed shut behind him, plunging the Vance estate into an eerie, pregnant silence.
