Chapter 12: A House Divided

Back at the main estate house, Elena was pacing frantically across the checkered marble floor of the foyer, holding Maria’s confiscated burner phone in her hand. The screen was locked, requiring a six-digit passcode, but the notification banner kept flashing silently at the top: Incoming Data Packet - Sync 89% complete.

She couldn't wait for Arthur to return from the barn. The clock on the wall read 2:14 AM, and the silence of the estate felt heavy, pregnant with impending catastrophe. She turned sharply and headed toward the domestic quarters, unlocking the nursery door with a firm twist of her wrist.

Maria was sitting in the rocking chair beside the crib, looking remarkably calm given her predicament. Little Leo had finally fallen back asleep, his chest rising and falling in steady, rhythmic breaths.

"The sync is almost complete, Maria," Elena said, stepping into the room and holding up the burner phone. "Whatever data you and Julian are trying to offload to the offshore server, it’s going to be intercepted right here."

Maria looked up, her expression devoid of fear, replaced by a strange, melancholic resignation. "You think stopping the data transfer saves you, Mrs. Vance? You think ignorance is a shield against what your husband's family did to mine?"

"Spare me the melodrama," Elena snapped, pulling out her own phone to dial the local sheriff's direct emergency dispatch line. "Your game is over. Julian is down at the barn right now facing Arthur, and the authorities are five minutes away."

Maria finally stood up, smoothing the front of her black maid's dress with slow, deliberate care. "Julian isn't there to steal money, Elena. He’s there to make sure Arthur finally opens his eyes to the truth about the land he’s so desperately trying to protect. That farm isn't a heaven trust fund. It’s a burial ground for secrets that should never have been dug up."

Elena’s thumb hovered over the call button on her screen. A cold knot formed in her stomach at the chilling certainty in the nanny's voice. Before she could press dial, the front door downstairs banged open with a heavy, reverberating crash, followed by the sound of rapid, heavy footsteps rushing across the foyer marble.
