Chapter 8: The Breach at the Gate

The security chime echoed through the quiet corridor like a gunshot, shattering the fragile standoff inside the nursery. Arthur dropped his hand from Maria’s sleeve, his head snapping toward the hallway. The master panel’s red indicator light meant only one thing: someone had used a physical override code to open the security gate at the far end of the private access road—the old service entrance that hadn't been actively used since the harvest season ended two months ago.

"Stay here," Arthur ordered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, authoritative register that brooked no argument. He turned sharply on his heel, striding out of the nursery and heading toward the main staircase that led down to the security monitor station in the ground-floor study.

Elena didn't stay. She cast one last venomous glare at Maria, who was slowly bending down to retrieve her dropped burner phone from beneath the dresser. With a swift, decisive movement, Elena lunged forward, kicking the device across the hardwood floor just out of the nanny's reach.

"Don't even think about it," Elena snapped, her dark eyes flashing with fierce determination. She scooped the small phone up off the floor herself, slipping it quickly into the deep pocket of her white dress before Maria could intercept her.

Maria’s professional facade finally cracked completely, a flash of genuine panic contorting her features. "You have no idea what you've just done, Mrs. Vance. That call was a confirmation ping. If the transmission isn't completed within the hour, the collateral damage won't just hit the bank accounts—it will hit the people inside this house."

"Quiet!" Elena hissed, stepping defensively between the nanny and the crib where little Leo was now beginning to cry in earnest, startled by the rising hostility in the room. "You’ve done enough damage for one lifetime, Maria. You are staying right here in this nursery until the local sheriff arrives."

Without waiting for a reply, Elena backed out of the room, pulling the heavy wooden door shut behind her and turning the brass lock from the outside with a sharp, satisfying click. She could hear Maria’s muffled protests and the frantic rattling of the doorknob, but she ignored them, turning her attention immediately to the hallway as Arthur came rushing back up the stairs, his face pale and grim.

"It wasn't a random trespasser," Arthur said, his voice breathless as he reached the landing. He grabbed Elena by the shoulders, his grip tight and urgent. "The live feed from the gate camera just uploaded to my tablet. Someone in a black sedan just drove up the service road and parked near the old barn. And they didn't use a forged code, Elena. They used my brother Julian’s personal biometric key."
