Chapter 3: Shadows in the Study

The heavy mahogany door of the study clicked shut behind them, sealing off the echoing expanse of the foyer, but the silence inside was far more oppressive. Arthur strode directly to his mahogany desk, bypassing the comfortable leather armchairs, and flipped the desk lamp on to illuminate the scattered papers Elena had left strewn across the blotter earlier that evening. He didn't sit down. Instead, he rested both palms on the polished wood surface, leaning forward as he scanned the top sheet of the financial audit report that Elena slammed down in front of him.
"These numbers are flagged by forensic accountants," Elena said, pacing the length of the Persian rug behind him. Her white dress rustled softly with every sharp pivot. "They aren't just administrative errors, Arthur. Someone with high-level access to the family trust administration portal executed these transfers. And the IP addresses trace directly back to the secure router installed in the guest suite upstairs—the one Maria occupies."
Arthur didn't look up immediately. His eyes tracked the neat rows of transaction dates, matching them mentally against his own travel schedule. Every single large-scale capital transfer coincided with a week he had spent out of state negotiating land acquisitions for the upcoming harvest season. "Maria doesn't have the technical background for this," he murmured, almost to himself. "She’s a certified nursemaid with a background in early childhood education. She barely knows how to operate the smart-home thermostat."
"People can learn, Arthur, especially when there are millions of dollars dangling as an incentive," Elena retorted, stopping right beside his chair. She leaned down, bringing her face level with his, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Or maybe she didn't act alone. Maybe she had an inside man. Someone with authorization credentials. Someone who shares my last name."
Arthur recoiled as if he had been physically struck. He straightened up slowly, his expression hardening into a mask of cold fury. "Are you implying that I am embezzling from my own son's trust fund? Have you lost your mind entirely, Elena? I built this empire from the ground up. Every acre of farmland, every cent in that trust, bears my blood, sweat, and legal liability."

"Then explain why Maria’s personal savings account received a fifty-thousand-dollar direct wire transfer from your corporate holding account three days before our anniversary," Elena challenged, slapping a printed bank statement onto the desk right over his hands.
Arthur stared at the paper. The figures stared back at him with undeniable clarity. The date was accurate. The routing numbers were authentic. A cold sweat began to bead at the back of his neck as he realized he had no explanation to offer, not because he was guilty, but because someone had deliberately forged his digital signature with terrifying precision.
