Chapter 8: The Velvet Secret Revealed

Lily reached out her small hands as Daniel crossed the wooden floorboards and knelt beside the bed. He handed her the worn rabbit, watching as she buried her face in its soft, familiar fur with a deep, shuddering sigh of relief. Then, placing the mahogany velvet box gently on the edge of the mattress, Daniel watched her expression shift from comfort back to caution. She looked at the box as if it were a venomous creature that might strike at any second.

"Is that... is that from her room?" Lily whispered, her voice barely louder than the hum of the bedside lamp.

"I found it hidden under your bed, Lily," Daniel said gently, his tone reassuring. "Your mother kept this locked away. Do you know what's inside?"

Lily shook her head slowly, her blonde curls brushing against her shoulders. "She told me if I ever touched the floorboards in my room, the bad men would find us and take everything away. She said we had to keep moving because people wanted to hurt us."

Daniel unlocked the brass clasp with a soft click, lifting the hinged lid to reveal the contents once more. Aside from the wooden music box and the ID card for Sarah Vance, there was a stack of folded bank statements from various out-of-state accounts, showing massive cash withdrawals made over the past five years under different aliases. It was a paper trail of deception, proving that Elena wasn't just running from an abusive past—she was actively hiding assets and living a double life financed by unknown means.

"You're safe here, Lily," Daniel said, taking the wooden music box and winding the key at its base. A delicate, melancholic lullaby filled the small guest room, echoing softly against the floral wallpaper. For the first time, the tension in the little girl's shoulders seemed to truly melt away. She looked at Daniel with a look of profound trust, a stark contrast to the venomous fury her mother had hurled at him from the cruiser.
