Chapter 6: Whispers in the Dark

The scraping noise came again, louder this time—a rhythmic tap against the exterior brickwork near the fire escape. Daniel moved with practiced stealth, hugging the shadowed wall of the corridor until he reached the living room window that looked out over the rear alleyway. He peered cautiously through the slats of the vertical blinds. Below, in the deepening twilight, a figure in a dark hooded sweatshirt stood near the base of the metal stairs, looking intently up toward apartment 402. The person lingered for a second before slipping away into the shadows cast by the dumpsters.
Daniel unlocked the front door and stepped back out onto the landing, his boots hitting the concrete with sharp resonance. The hallway was empty, lit only by the amber glow of the emergency exit signs. He pulled out his department radio, calling in a perimeter check for the rear alleyway. Marcus’s voice crackled back through the static within seconds, advising him that uniform units were already sweeping the lower levels. The coincidence was too precise. Someone knew Elena had been arrested, and someone was looking for whatever she had left behind in the apartment.

Back inside, Daniel secured the velvet box inside his duty bag alongside the plush rabbit. He walked back to the kitchen, his eyes lingering on the cold mug of cocoa. He wondered what Lily was doing right now at the Millers' house. Were they reading her a bedtime story? Was she finally sleeping without the phantom dread of footsteps outside her door? The vulnerability of the little girl weighed heavily on his conscience, reminding him that every minute he spent digging into Elena’s past was another minute Lily had to live with the psychological fallout of the rescue.
He locked the heavy oak door behind him, pulling the yellow police tape back into place across the frame. The drive to the Miller residence was quiet, the city lights blurring into long streaks of red and white through the rain-spotted windshield. Daniel knew that tomorrow the real battle would begin in the family courtrooms, where clever lawyers would try to paint him as an overstepping cop and Elena as a misunderstood victim of circumstance.
