Chapter 13: A New Dawn

The morning sun broke through the autumn clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the front porch of the Miller residence. Lily sat on the porch swing, her legs swinging gently back and forth as the wooden chains creaked in rhythm with the breeze. She wore her light blue dress—the very same one from the day of the arrest, now washed and pressed—and her blonde hair was tied back with a neat yellow ribbon. In her lap, she clutched the worn gray plush rabbit, but her fingers were no longer white-knuckled with terror.

Daniel walked up the wooden steps, holding a small paper bag containing a fresh pastry from the local bakery. When Lily saw him approach, a genuine, unburdened smile spread across her face, transforming her features entirely. The haunted look in her eyes had been replaced by the bright, curious gaze of a seven-year-old child who finally understood what it meant to be safe.

"Good morning, Lily," Daniel said softly, sitting down on the edge of the porch railing and handing her the bag. "How did you sleep?"

"Without the noise," Lily whispered happily, peeking inside the bag to find a chocolate croissant. "Mr. Miller taught me how to plant tulip bulbs in the backyard yesterday. We put them deep in the dirt so they'll grow when the spring comes."

Daniel smiled, feeling a deep sense of peace settle into his chest. The shadows of apartment 402 felt a million miles away. The lies, the forged documents, the venomous fury of a mother running from her own sins—they were all locked behind prison doors where they belonged.
