Chapter 10: The Hidden Ledger

Back at his desk in the bullpen, Daniel stared at the financial printouts Marcus had pulled from the subpoenaed bank accounts. The numbers didn't make sense for a freelance consultant or a minor investor. Large sums were being deposited every month from a numbered shell corporation based overseas, funneled through a network of shell accounts that spanned three different states. It was money designed to disappear, untraceable by standard tax audits. And yet, Elena had been hoarding cash in the mahogany box under Lily's bed, terrified of digital transactions that might trigger an alarm.

Marcus walked over, tossing a fresh file onto Daniel's desk. "We ran the corporate registry on that shell company. Guess who the primary beneficiary was registered under before the files were sealed five years ago?"

Daniel looked up, his brow furrowed. "Who?"

"A man named Richard Vance," Marcus said grimly. "Not your relative, and not Elena's current husband. He was an executive at a defense contracting firm who disappeared under federal investigation for embezzlement right around the time Sarah Vance supposedly drowned off the coast of Maine."

The pieces violently collided in Daniel's mind. Elena wasn't just running from a bad relationship; she was hiding from federal authorities who were still looking for millions in missing corporate funds. She had changed her identity, assumed a new life, and dragged her daughter through a nomadic existence of fear and paranoia, punishing the child whenever the illusion threatened to crack. Lily had been the ultimate pawn in a high-stakes game of financial evasion.

"That's why she panicked when the school board requested the residency verification," Daniel muttered, standing up from his chair. "She knew a background check would expose the fake identity, and she took her anger out on Lily."
