Chapter 7

Dawn broke slowly over the manicured lawns of the estate, painting the sky in pale shades of amber and bruised violet. Clara sat at the kitchen island, staring blankly into a mug of black coffee she had no intention of drinking. Lily was still asleep upstairs, exhausted from the emotional turbulence of the previous day. The house was unnaturally quiet; Tyler had already left for his office before sunrise, avoiding any continuation of the previous night’s tension.
The front doorbell chimed—a sharp, unexpected sound that shattered the morning quiet. Clara blinked, glancing at the wall clock. It was barely seven o'clock. Private couriers rarely arrived this early, and visitors were practically non-existent in Emily’s secluded world.
Wiping her hands on a clean dish towel, Clara walked toward the grand foyer. Through the frosted glass of the front door, she recognized a familiar silhouette: Marcus, Tyler’s estranged younger brother who had supposedly been disowned years ago for refusing to join the family firm. Clara had only met him once at a brief, disastrous family dinner before he vanished from their lives entirely.
She unlocked the heavy deadbolt and pulled the door open. Marcus stood on the porch, looking tired and weather-beaten, wearing a worn denim jacket that stood out sharply against the pristine wealth of the doorway. He looked past Clara into the foyer, his eyes filled with a mixture of urgency and grim warning.
"Marcus?" Clara breathed, stepping back to let him in. "What are you doing here? If Emily sees you—"
"I know she’s here," Marcus interrupted, his voice a gravelly whisper as he stepped inside and shut the door behind him. He looked at Clara’s bruised cheek, his jaw tightening instantly. "She hasn't changed a bit, has she? I see you're learning the hard way what kind of house you married into."
"How do you know about the bruise?" Clara asked, closing the distance between them.
"Because I wore the invisible versions of it for twenty years before I walked out," Marcus said bitterly. He pulled a folded manila envelope from his jacket and laid it on the entryway table. "I’ve been watching the house, Clara. More importantly, I’ve been tracking the medical specialists Emily has been consulting behind your back. She isn't just preparing for your surgery next month—she’s arranging to have your post-op care transferred to a private facility where you won't have visitors, and where Tyler won't ask questions."

Clara stared at the envelope, her breath catching. The pieces were falling into place with terrifying speed. "She’s planning to lock me away."
"Permanently," Marcus confirmed grimly. "Unless we move first."
