Chapter 6

The revelation from the ledger burned in Clara’s mind like a live coal. She slid the photographs and the leather-bound book back into their hidden compartment, her fingers trembling slightly despite her best efforts to remain steady. Every instinct screamed at her to pack a bag, grab Lily, and run out into the night. But common sense held her back. The estate was gated, monitored by private security cameras, and without access to a vehicle or untraceable funds, fleeing blindly into the rural suburbs with a two-year-old was a recipe for disaster.
She needed a strategy. She needed allies beyond these guarded walls.
As she turned away from the bookcase, a soft scrape of leather against wood echoed in the doorway. Clara froze. Standing in the shadow of the study entrance, draped in a silk robe that shimmered silver in the faint moonlight, was Emily. The older woman didn't look surprised; her expression was one of cold, academic curiosity, as if she were observing a lab rat testing the limits of its maze.
"Curiosity, Clara, is a fatal trait for those with compromised health," Emily said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, melodic calm that chilled the blood in Clara’s veins.
Clara stood her ground, refusing to shrink back. She straightened her posture, letting the anger wash away the lingering fear. "How many women have you broken, Emily? How many wives did Tyler cycle through before I came along and mistook his silence for depth?"
Emily stepped further into the room, the dim light catching the hard angles of her face. She did not deny the accusation; instead, a faint, sardonic smile touched the corners of her mouth. "We do not break people, Clara. We refine them. Tyler carries a legacy that requires absolute stability. Weakness—whether it is physical illness or emotional rebellion—cannot be permitted to jeopardize the family name."
"He’s your son, not your property," Clara hissed, her voice vibrating with restrained fury. "And Lily is my daughter. You will not touch her, and you will not dictate whether I live or die."
May you like
"You speak of survival as if it is guaranteed," Emily replied smoothly, taking another slow step forward. "Your surgery next month carries a thirty percent mortality rate. Did you think Tyler didn't tell me? We signed the consent forms together, my dear. If you survive, you conform. If you do not, Lily remains here, safely embedded in the lineage where she belongs."
The words struck Clara harder than the physical blow earlier that morning. They weren't just plotting against her independence; they were planning for her death, treating her life as a temporary inconvenience with a scheduled expiration date. The sheer horror of the realization galvanized Clara. She couldn't afford to be a victim. She had to outsmart them.
