Chapter 10

Days bled into one another in a tense, claustrophobic blur. The atmosphere inside the estate grew so thick with hostility that even two-year-old Lily seemed to sense the danger, clinging tightly to Clara’s side and refusing to let Emily approach her. Tyler spent most of his time away, burying himself in office work to escape the domestic friction, completely blind to the war zone his home had become.
Clara used the stolen hours to finalize her preparations. She managed to smuggle her passport, important financial documents, and Lily’s birth certificate out of the master bedroom, hiding them inside the lining of a winter coat stored in the mudroom closet. Marcus had established a secure safehouse thirty miles away, equipped with a trusted family attorney specializing in high-net-worth domestic custody battles.
The tension reached a boiling point three nights before the scheduled surgery.
Dinner was a silent, agonizing affair. Emily sat at the head of the long mahogany dining table, her posture rigid, her eyes fixed on Clara with undisguised malice. Tyler pushed his food around his plate, clearly exhausted from the corporate acquisition that was dominating his life.
"The hospital admission is finalized for Monday morning at six," Emily announced suddenly, breaking the heavy silence. Her voice was flat, carrying the weight of an executioner pronouncing a sentence. "Tyler, you will drop Clara off at the private wing. I will handle the arrangements for Lily here at the estate."
Clara looked up from her plate, her heart hammering against her ribs. This was the moment. The trap was closing.
"No," Clara said clearly, laying her napkin down beside her plate.
Tyler stopped chewing, looking up in sheer bewilderment. "What do you mean, no? It's a hospital admission, Clara. You need the surgery."
"I am having the surgery," Clara replied, her voice steady and resonant in the large dining room. "At City General Hospital, under the care of the independent surgical team I selected, not the private clinic your mother has chosen behind my back."
Tyler turned an incredulous gaze toward his mother. "Mother? What is she talking about?"
Emily did not flinch. She maintained her icy composure, though a muscle feathered in her jaw. "Clara is suffering from severe preoperative anxiety, Tyler. Her mind is creating conspiracies where none exist. For her own safety and the stability of our family, she must follow the directives we have established."

"The directives you forged," Clara countered sharply, sliding a copy of the fraudulent power-of-attorney documents across the polished mahogany table directly toward Tyler. "Read them, Tyler. Look at your own signature. Your mother signed away my medical autonomy without my knowledge or consent."
Tyler stared down at the papers, his face draining of color as he recognized the forged ink. The fragile illusion of his perfect family life fractured right before his eyes, leaving him stranded between the domineering shadow of his mother and the fierce, unyielding gaze of his wife.
