Chapter 12

The hallway was dim, illuminated only by the pale emergency lights that flickered as the estate's main electrical breaker tripped. Marcus stepped out from the shadows near the grand staircase, holding the mudroom door open. He didn't say a word, offering Clara a brief, reassuring nod as she approached with Lily cradled firmly in her arms.

Behind them, heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood. Tyler stumbled out of the dining room, his face pale, his hands still clutching the fraudulent legal documents.

"Clara, wait—where are you going? You can't just leave like this!" Tyler called out, his voice a desperate mix of anger and panic. He looked like a man standing on the edge of a crumbling cliff, finally realizing he had no ground left beneath his feet.

Clara paused at the threshold, turning to look back at her husband one last time. There was no hatred in her eyes, only a profound, heartbreaking pity. "You could have chosen us, Tyler. You could have chosen truth over your mother's ghost. But you waited too long."

"I'm coming with you," Tyler stammered, taking a step forward. "We can fix this—"

"No," Clara interrupted softly. "You need to figure out who you are when your mother isn't writing your script. Until then, you have no place in our lives."

Before Tyler could respond, Emily rounded the corner of the hallway, her face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. "Let her go, Tyler! Let the ungrateful parasite walk out that door, and she will never see a cent of this estate again! She’ll die in a public ward, and your son will bear our name alone!"

Clara didn't flinch at the venom in the older woman's voice. She turned her back on the ancestral home, stepping out into the cool night air where Marcus waited by the idling engine of a nondescript sedan parked just beyond the perimeter fence. The crisp breeze kissed her face, carrying the scent of pine and absolute freedom. She strapped Lily safely into the child seat in the back, climbed into the front passenger seat, and watched through the window as the gates of the estate slowly faded into the dark.
