Chapter 9: The Investigator

The name hung in the foyer air like a death sentence. Arthur did not flinch, his face remaining a mask of stony indifference honed by decades of military discipline. From his vantage point in the kitchen, Mark could see the broad shoulder of a man in a dark civilian suit standing on the porch, his posture radiating the unmistakable authority of federal enforcement.

"You're out of your jurisdiction without a local escort, Agent Miller," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a measured, gravelly challenge. "And this is a private residence."

"Under the National Security Act provisions regarding classified archival material, my jurisdiction is wherever those documents happen to land, Colonel," Miller replied smoothly, his tone polite yet utterly inflexible. "An encrypted transmission pinged our monitoring servers twenty minutes ago. It originated from an IP address registered to this property, pointing directly to deployment logs from nineteen-ninety-four that were officially designated for destruction."

In the kitchen, Mark felt a cold sweat break out across the back of his neck. He had underestimated the digital tracking capabilities of the agency. He had assumed that checking the file locally was safe, but the metadata had broadcasted their location the moment he opened the digital folder attached to the anonymous tip.

Elena whispered fiercely to Mark, her grip tightening on his arm. "They tracked the file from here? Mark, you told me you used a secure browser!"

"I thought I did," Mark whispered back, panic threatening to override his common sense. "The proxy must have been compromised from the start. It was a trap to draw them right to us."

At the front door, Arthur shifted his stance slightly, blocking the agent's view of the interior hallway. "There is nothing of operational significance in this house, Agent. Just personal effects from my service history, most of which have already been cleared through standard decommissioning channels."

"With respect, sir, our digital ping didn't register personal effects," Miller said, his voice stepping up a notch in firmness. "It registered a Level Four classified file manifest. I'm going to need you to step aside, Colonel, and let me search the premises pursuant to emergency directive ninety-four dash delta."

Arthur did not move an inch. He stood like a granite monument in the doorway, embodying every ounce of the stubborn authority that had made him a legendary commander. "You want to search my daughter's home, you bring a warrant signed by a federal magistrate and a local sheriff, Miller. Until then, you are standing on private property without authorization."
