Chapter 4: The Unseen Protocol

The revelation hung in the air like smoke. Arthur’s posture stiffened even further, his military instincts kicking in instantly. He scanned the bright, modern kitchen, his eyes lingering on the large windows that looked out onto the quiet suburban street. For the first time, the older man looked genuinely vulnerable, not for himself, but for the family dwelling within these walls. The quiet neighborhood suddenly felt less like a sanctuary and more like a tactical blind spot.

"You should have brought the file directly to me without opening it," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a stern command tone. "By breaking the seal, you activated a chain of custody breach. Whoever sent that tip didn't just want you to know the truth; they wanted to use you as a vector to bring those documents into the open."

Elena shook her head, disbelief washing over her features. She looked at her husband with sudden, piercing scrutiny. "You knew about this tip for three days, Mark? You kept this from me while I was sitting across from you at dinner, while we were talking about the nursery colors, while I was carrying our child?"

"I didn't want to stress you out," Mark said defensively, taking a half-step toward her with his hands raised in a placating gesture. "You're seven months pregnant, Elena. The doctor explicitly said you need to avoid high-stress situations. I thought I could handle it, investigate the source quietly, and put it to bed before it ever reached you."

"Well, you failed," Elena replied, her voice remarkably steady despite the tears pooling in her eyes. "You threw a frying pan across the room, you shattered our cabinet, and now my father is standing in our kitchen treating our home like an active combat zone. You don't get to decide what I can handle, Mark. We are partners, or at least I thought we were."

Arthur stepped between them, not physically separating them, but intercepting the emotional crossfire with the authority of his presence. "Arguing among yourselves is exactly what the adversary wants. Division is the first casualty of an intelligence leak. Mark made a tactical error in concealment, and you made an error in judgment by digging into archives you were never meant to touch, but right now, we have an immediate perimeter security issue."

Mark stared at his father-in-law, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. "Perimeter security? Arthur, this isn't a base in the Hindu Kush. This is a cul-de-sac in Ohio. Nobody is watching us."

"People are always watching when sensitive state secrets are involved," Arthur countered coldly. He walked over to the kitchen counter and placed the yellow envelope down next to the fruit bowl, covering it with a napkin as if mere concealment would negate its existence. "The fact that someone reached out to you means the archive is compromised at the source. That trunk in the attic was supposed to be destroyed twenty years ago during the base decommissioning."
