Chapter 3: Shadows on the Record

The kitchen grew colder as Arthur tucked the manila envelope securely under his arm. He held it with the automatic care of a man accustomed to safeguarding operational intelligence. Mark’s hands remained clenched at his sides, his fingernails digging into his palms. The anger in his chest had transformed into a heavy, suffocating dread. He realized then that finding the documents had not given him leverage; it had only drawn him into a web of accountability he could no longer escape.
Elena gripped the edge of the kitchen island for support, her knuckles turning white. "Dad, give it here. I mean it. If this involves our family, our future, and this baby, you do not get to pull rank on us in our own home."
Arthur sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of decades of unshared burdens. He looked at Elena with a mixture of paternal affection and professional detachment. "Elena, ignorance is sometimes the only armor a family has. What is in this envelope isn't a simple paperwork error or a bureaucratic oversight. It is a record of choices made under impossible pressure. Choices that required sacrifices most people cannot even begin to comprehend."
"Is that what you call treason now?" Mark interjected, his voice rising again, though he kept his distance this time, respecting the physical authority Arthur still commanded. "Calling it a sacrifice? You ruined lives, Arthur. You buried the truth so deep that innocent people took the blame while the command structure walked away clean."
"I followed orders to protect national security, Mark," Arthur fired back, his tone dropping to a dangerous, low register. "And those orders kept this country stable during a time when chaos was inches away from consuming everything we loved. You read the files, but you lack the perspective of the theater of operations. You sit in a modern kitchen in a peaceful suburb and judge decisions made in the dark."
Elena stepped forward, ignoring the physical ache in her lower back. "Stop talking about this like it's a war game! That's my husband and that's my father arguing over secrets that are poisoning our lives right now. Mark, why were you even looking through that trunk? You told me you were just moving seasonal bins."
Mark hesitated, his eyes darting briefly to Elena before returning to Arthur. The lie was unsustainable now. The truth had already breached the perimeter. "I wasn't just moving bins, Elena. I received an anonymous tip three days ago. An encrypted digital message with a file path pointing directly to your father's old unit records and the physical archive stored in this house."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed sharply, a rare flicker of genuine surprise crossing his stern features. "An anonymous tip? From whom?"
"I don't know," Mark admitted, running a hand over his face. "The sender used a burner protocol. But they knew I was married to your daughter, and they knew what was in the attic. They said if I didn't verify the documents, someone else would come looking for them very soon."
