Chapter 11: The Backup Plan

Arthur stared at Mark, his military instincts instantly analyzing the younger man’s erratic shift in posture. "What are you talking about, Mark? You heard the man. The perimeter is monitored. If you try to walk out of here with those files, you won't make it to the end of the driveway before federal marshals take you down."
"I'm not going to walk out the front door," Mark said, his voice steadying as a frantic plan coalesced in his mind. He looked toward the rear of the kitchen, where the heavy glass sliding doors led out to the backyard patio and the dense tree line bordering the property. "The anonymous tip didn't just include a file path to the local archive, Arthur. It included a secure drop destination—an independent investigative journalist in Washington who has been tracking military cover-ups for a decade."
Elena’s eyes widened in sudden comprehension. "You mean you can upload the files directly to them right now?"
"If I can get to the home office terminal in the basement before Miller kicks this door in," Mark said, turning toward the basement stairwell door tucked discreetly behind the pantry. "The basement has an independent fiber line that bypasses the primary residential router. It’s encrypted through a secondary VPN I set up for my remote consulting work."
Arthur looked at the basement door, then back at Mark. The older man’s stern expression softened for a fraction of a second, replaced by the calculating approval of a commanding officer recognizing a desperate tactical maneuver. "You have maybe forty seconds before Miller loses his patience and calls in the local sweep team. If you get caught transmitting classified files to a civilian journalist, you aren't just looking at a security breach—you're looking at federal felony charges under the Patriot Act."
"I'll take those odds over living the rest of my life under your thumb and the Pentagon's lies," Mark replied without hesitation, his voice firm and resolute. He looked at Elena, his eyes softening with deep affection and apology. "El, stay here. If Miller comes in, tell him I went out the back. Don't let them pin this on you or the baby."

Elena grabbed Mark’s arm before he could turn away, her grip fierce and unyielding. "No. We do this together. If they want to tear our lives apart, they're going to have to do it with both of us standing right here."
Before Mark could argue, a heavy, resonant thud echoed from the front entryway. Agent Miller was no longer waiting politely on the porch. The front door shook under the weight of an authorized federal breach.
