Chapter 6: Confrontation in the Dark

Elena sat frozen in the dim light of the master bedroom, the closed laptop resting on her knees like a slab of ice. Her mind raced through a dozen survival scenarios, each one more terrifying than the last. The man she had loved for nearly a decade—the father of her child, the successful businessman with the charming smile—was a stranger. Worse than a stranger; he was a manipulator who had willingly risked their newborn daughter's safety to gain leverage over her.

"El?" David’s footsteps approached the master bedroom door, heavy and measured. The brass doorknob rattled as he tried to turn it. Finding it locked, he paused. A moment of dead silence hung in the hallway.

"The door is locked," David said, his voice calm, entirely devoid of the warmth he usually reserved for her. "Open it, Elena."

Elena stood up slowly, placing the laptop on the bed. She slipped the micro-SD card out of the adapter and tucked it securely into the pocket of her black pants. She took a deep breath, forcing her trembling hands to steady. She couldn't cower now. Not with Lily sleeping just down the hall in the nursery.

"Just a minute," Elena called out, her voice remarkably even. She walked to the bathroom, splashed cold water on her face, and unlocked the door, pulling it open.

David stood in the doorway, his blue button-down shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his expression inscrutable. He looked past her into the bedroom, his eyes scanning the room before landing on her face. "Why was it locked?"

"I was changing," Elena lied smoothly, holding his gaze. She refused to let him see her fear. "Why are you back up here so fast? Did you fix the fuse?"

"The fuse is fine. It was just a tripped breaker," David replied, stepping past her into the room without an invitation. He walked over to the bed, his eyes flicking toward the laptop. "You were working?"

"Just checking emails," Elena said, stepping between him and the computer. "Lily is sleeping. I want to leave her alone."

David stopped, looking down at her with a chillingly affectionate smile that didn't reach his eyes. He reached out, his hand gently brushing a stray strand of blonde hair from her cheek—the exact same hand that had gripped her throat less than twenty-four hours ago.

"You've been acting paranoid all day, El," David said softly. "I think all this stress is getting to you. Maybe you should take a drive out to my mother's place in the country for a few days. Clear your head. I can handle things here with Lily."

The trap was closing. Every word he spoke mirrored the plot she had just watched on the video file. He was executing the second phase of his plan, assuming she was still too traumatized to fight back.

"I'm not going anywhere, David," Elena said, her voice dropping to a cold whisper. "And neither is Lily."
