Chapter 1

The air in the nursery tasted of ozone and stale panic. Elena pressed her back against the white drywall, her breath hitching as David’s large hand tightened around her throat. His fingers were bruisingly cold, contrasting sharply with the blistering heat of rage in his dark eyes. Across the room, Sarah—the night nurse we had trusted with our newborn daughter—sobbed uncontrollably, clutching little Lily against her grey-scrubbed chest. The white baby monitor mounted near the ceiling hummed a low, mechanical note, its tiny green light blinking like a distant, indifferent star recording our ruin.

"Get out of the way. Now. What did you do to my daughter?" David growled, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the frame of the window.

Elena struggled against his grip, her hands flying to his wrists, trying to pry his fingers loose. Her dark red blouse twisted painfully against her collarbone. She was furious, terrified, and suffocating all at once. "David, stop! Let me go! She dropped her, David! On the carpet, right on her head!"

"I didn't mean to!" Sarah wailed, rocking back and forth on the white carpet, her sleek dark bun coming undone as strands of hair stuck to her tear-streaked cheeks. "The floor gave out! My foot—the floorboards shifted!"

David slowly released Elena, though his glare remained fixed on her for a fraction of a second longer than necessary before he turned his fury toward the nurse. Elena stumbled forward, coughing and rubbing her bruised throat, gulping the bright nursery air. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The sheer violence of David's reaction startled her more than the fall itself. They had been married for eight years, built a comfortable life in this sunlit cul-de-sac, and yet, in the span of ten seconds, their home had transformed into a war zone.

"Get up," David commanded, stepping over a fallen rattle. His blue button-down shirt was stretched tight across his chest, his short brown hair slightly disheveled. "Give me the baby."

Sarah hesitated, burying her face in Lily's pink onesie. "No, Mr. Miller. She's breathing, but she hit the baseboard. We need an ambulance."

Elena regained her footing, pushing past David to kneel beside the nurse. Despite her anger, maternal instinct overrode everything else. She gently placed a hand on Lily's tiny back, feeling the frantic rise and fall of her chest. The baby’s cries had quieted into exhausted, ragged whimpers.

"Give her to me," Elena said, her voice dropping into a steady, authoritative tone that surprised them both. "Now, Sarah."
