Chapter 12

Three days had passed since David's arrest. The suburban cul-de-sac had returned to its quiet, eerie normalcy, but inside the Miller household, everything had changed. Forensics teams had dismantled the baby monitor, seized the local server logs, and confirmed every detail of Sarah's confession. David was currently being held at the county detention center without bail, facing multiple felony charges including child endangerment, conspiracy, and financial fraud.
Elena sat at the kitchen island, nursing a cup of cold coffee while reviewing financial statements spread out before her. The fallout was staggering. David’s tech startup had officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy the morning after his arrest, and their joint accounts had been temporarily frozen pending the investigation into the embezzled trust funds.
A soft knock sounded at the front door.
Elena stood up, smoothing down her black pants and walking through the quiet foyer. She opened the door to find Sarah standing on the porch, looking hesitant and worn, clutching the strap of her purse with white-knuckled fingers.
"Mrs. Miller," Sarah said softly, keeping her eyes fixed on the welcome mat. "I... I wanted to come by and apologize in person. I know saying sorry doesn't fix what happened to Lily, but I couldn't live with myself if I didn't try."
Elena studied the young nurse. The panic and tears from that fateful day in the nursery were gone, replaced by a deep, quiet remorse.
"Come in, Sarah," Elena said, stepping aside to open the door wider.
They walked into the living room, sitting on opposite ends of the white sofa. For a moment, neither spoke. The silence was heavy, but unlike the suffocating silence Elena had shared with David, this one felt honest.
"Why did you go along with him for as long as you did, Sarah?" Elena asked gently, her voice devoid of anger.

Sarah looked down at her hands. "I needed the job, Mrs. Miller. My mother has chronic medical bills, and the agency placement paid double standard rates. When Mr. Miller approached me with his plan, he threatened to make sure I was blacklisted from every hospital in the state if I refused. I was weak. I was scared. But when I actually dropped Lily... seeing her fall, hearing her cry... I realized I couldn't be part of his games anymore."
Elena nodded slowly. She understood fear. She had lived under its shadow for years without realizing it.
