Chapter 14

The moving trucks arrived on a crisp Tuesday morning in late October. The white walls of the nursery were bare, the white crib disassembled and packed away in cardboard boxes, and the old life of deceit was effectively boxed up and sealed shut. Elena stood in the center of the empty room in her black pants and a simple white t-shirt, holding a sleeping Lily in her arms.
The local prosecutor had called her earlier that morning to confirm that David had officially waived his right to a preliminary hearing, opting instead to enter plea negotiations under overwhelming evidence of financial fraud and endangerment. He would spend years behind bars, stripped of his wealth, his status, and his illusions of control. The legal battle would be long, but the outcome was certain.
A sharp honk from the driveway signaled that the movers were ready for the final load.
Elena took one last look around the nursery. The white baby monitor mount had been unscrewed from the wall, leaving behind two small screw holes that would soon be patched over by new owners. Nothing of the old facade remained.
"Ready, little one?" Elena whispered, pressing a soft kiss to Lily’s forehead. The baby stirred, let out a contented sigh, and snuggled closer against her chest.

Elena walked down the stairs for the final time, her footsteps ringing clear and strong against the hardwood floors. She stepped out onto the front porch, pulling the heavy front door shut behind her and locking it with a sharp, decisive turn of the key. She didn't look back as she walked down the driveway toward her SUV.
The past was behind them, buried under the weight of truth and accountability. Ahead lay Boston, the crisp autumn air, and a future where she and Lily would never have to look over their shoulders again.
