Chapter 9 - The Breach

The thunderous crash of the front door splintering off its hinges shook the floorboards beneath their feet. Shouted commands echoed down the hallway in a chaotic wave of authority: "Down on the ground! Hands where we can see them! Nobody move!"
Within seconds, heavy-booted tactical officers in black Kevlar vests and helmets swarmed the living room, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting red dots across the walls. Two officers immediately pinned Caleb against the kitchen counter, slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency, while Caleb offered no resistance, merely grinning as he was forced down.
"Dad!" Marcus screamed, instinctively lunging forward, but a gloved hand grabbed his shoulder firmly, pushing him back toward the kitchen wall alongside his mother.
"Marcus, stay back!" David yelled, raising his own hands high in the air as three officers converged on him from the hallway.
"David Miller! You're under arrest for corporate conspiracy, grand larceny, and obstruction of justice!" the lead officer barked, pressing David face-first against the living room wall. The heavy click of handcuffs snapping shut around David’s wrists sounded like a death knell for the family.
Sarah stood frozen, clutching the small metal flash drive so tightly in her fist that the sharp edges cut into her skin. Her mind spun wildly as she watched her husband—the man she had shared a bed, bills, and quiet Sunday mornings with for nearly two decades—being hauled toward the shattered front door like a common criminal.
"He didn't do anything!" Sarah shouted, stepping forward past the officers. "You're making a mistake! It was his brother—that man in the kitchen set him up!"
The lead officer glanced back at Sarah, his expression entirely devoid of emotion. "Ma'am, step back or you'll be detained as an accomplice. We’ve had a warrant out for David Miller under this alias for three weeks. The digital forensics team pulled his secure signature off a transferred asset account this morning."
David looked back over his shoulder just as they were leading him out onto the porch. His eyes met Marcus’s across the crowded room. There was no anger left in his face, only a profound, heartbreaking sorrow and a silent plea for forgiveness.

As the front door slammed shut behind the departing officers and the flashing lights slowly began to recede down the street, Marcus looked down at the coffee table and noticed something that made his blood run cold: the real smartphone—his actual phone—was blinking with a new voicemail icon labeled: From Unknown - Play immediately.
