Chapter 3 - Shadows Behind the Glass

David’s fingers hovered just above the glowing screen. The harsh blue light illuminated the stern angles of his face, casting deep shadows beneath his short dark hair and trimmed beard. When his eyes scanned the preview image of the duffel bag resting against the garage exterior, the color seemed to drain entirely from his complexion. The domestic annoyance he had felt moments ago vanished, replaced by an acute, heavy alertness.

"Marcus," David said, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper. "What is this?"

"I don't know!" Marcus blurted out, finally abandoning his defiant posture. He stood up abruptly from the leather sofa, his hands raised slightly in a defensive gesture. "I swear, Dad, I didn't order anything! It’s not mine!"

Sarah rushed forward from the kitchen threshold, her eyes wide with alarm as she caught sight of the phone screen in her husband's hand. The green t-shirt David wore seemed to tighten across his broad shoulders as he straightened up, stepping between his son and the front window. The casual comfort of their evening had been shattered in a matter of seconds, replaced by an intrusive paranoia that felt suffocating.

"David, what's going on?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling slightly as she reached out to touch her husband’s arm. "Whose phone is that? That’s not Marcus’s lock screen."

Marcus felt the room spin slightly. The phone in David's hand looked identical to his own—same black protective case, same model—but as he stared at his own actual phone, which was currently sitting buried deep between the couch cushions where he had tossed it earlier, a sickening realization hit him. He had picked up the wrong device off the kitchen counter twenty minutes ago while grabbing a glass of water. Someone had swapped their phones right under their noses.

David’s jaw tightened as he unlocked the stranger’s phone using a thumbprint scanner that somehow matched—or perhaps the device wasn't locked as securely as they thought. A video file automatically began to play on the screen, showing the interior of a dark, unfamiliar warehouse filled with crates and stacked electronics.

Before anyone could speak or breathe, a heavy, deliberate knock echoed loudly against the front door, rattling the glass in the frame and plunging the family into sudden, freezing silence.
